Every autumn the Tokyo Bay waterfront in Chiba becomes the meeting point of Asia's energy industry. This September Gridradix was there too — walking the halls of SMART ENERGY WEEK [Autumn] 2026 at Makuhari Messe, three days that pack the entire energy transition into a single venue.
One ticket, seven expos
SMART ENERGY WEEK is not one show but a cluster. Under one roof, and on one badge, it brings together H₂ & FC EXPO for hydrogen and fuel cells, PV EXPO for solar, BATTERY JAPAN for rechargeable batteries and storage, SMART GRID EXPO for grids, VPPs and energy management, WIND EXPO, CCUS EXPO for carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and I-TEX for thermal energy. Special zones this year added Fusion Power World, BIPV World, Floating Offshore Wind World and an ESS (Energy Storage System) World — so a visitor can move from perovskite cells to grid-scale batteries to offshore wind foundations in a single walk across the halls.
By the numbers
The organiser, RX Japan, reports around 550 exhibiting companies and some 45,000 visitors over the three days, with a conference programme of roughly a hundred sessions running alongside the exhibition. The audience is unusually senior — the organiser notes that well over half of visitors at the previous edition were at manager level or above — and international: alongside Japanese utilities and manufacturers, the halls draw exhibitors and buyers from across Asia, notably China and South Korea, as well as Europe and North America.
Who comes
The visitor profile reads like a map of the sector: electric utilities and gas companies, national and municipal government, project developers, general contractors, house manufacturers, industrial energy users and a steady stream of new entrants to the energy industry. It is one of the few places where the people who make equipment, the people who buy it and the people who regulate it are in the same building for three days.
What stood out
Three themes dominated the floor. First, storage everywhere — battery energy storage systems at every scale, from residential units to containerised grid-scale installations, with a clear shift toward systems designed for grid services rather than simple back-up. Second, hydrogen moving from demonstration to product: electrolysers, fuel-cell systems and hydrogen-ready thermal equipment presented as catalogue items, not prototypes. Third, the grid edge — VPP platforms, distribution automation, protection and monitoring for inverter-based resources, and the software that has to hold all of it together. For anyone working on the integration of renewables into real networks, the SMART GRID EXPO halls were the most interesting rooms in the building.
Why it matters to Gridradix
Gridradix's work sits exactly at the junction these halls describe: the grid integration of renewable generation, and the protection, control and automation that keeps it stable. Japan is one of our core markets, with a presence in Tokyo, and Makuhari is where the equipment, the buyers and the standards conversations of the Asian energy transition sit in one place. We came to look, to listen and to compare notes — and we will be back.
