Project context
Kaniv HPP is a major station of the Dnipro cascade, running 24 horizontal bulb-type hydro units under a long-term modernisation programme. The assignment focused on relay-protection commissioning for a hydro-generator in the approximately 24 MW class, together with a separate protection scope for a generator block comprising five units — delivered as a single, coherent multi-vendor protection package.
Scope of work
Commissioned and tuned generator protection on ABB REG650 and Siemens SIPROTEC 5 platforms, applying the approved protection philosophy to the hydro-generator and its associated generator block.
Verified measurement circuits and protection inputs for current, voltage and frequency quantities, together with the corresponding binary status and command signals.
Configured and checked the applicable generator protection functions — differential and earth-fault protection, voltage and frequency supervision, power-related protection, thermal monitoring and backup overcurrent — in accordance with the project scheme.
Checked protection logic, trip matrices, blocking/permissive conditions and the interfaces to generator circuit-breaker control and plant automation.
Performed functional testing of protection pickup, alarm and trip paths and validated event/indication behaviour for commissioning and subsequent maintenance diagnostics.
Coordinated settings and logic between ABB and Siemens devices so that the protection package operated as one consistent multi-vendor system.
This assignment strengthened the protection layer around generating equipment by combining device-level configuration with end-to-end verification of the complete protection path. Particular attention was paid to correct coordination between independent protection channels and the plant control system.
