Amgen Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility
22 kV digital substation — 156 panels with ABB Relion REX615
Amgen operates major pharmaceutical manufacturing infrastructure in Ireland, including its large Dún Laoghaire facility. The electrical modernisation project involved reconstruction of a 22 kV substation with 156 medium-voltage panels and the creation of a fully automated, digital protection-and-control environment on ABB Relion REX615 IEDs — moving the site from conventional panel-by-panel control to an integrated IEC 61850 digital substation, without interrupting a continuously operated production environment.
- Participated in the reconstruction and commissioning of a large 22 kV substation consisting of 156 medium-voltage switchgear panels.
- Configured ABB Relion REX615 protection and control relays for feeder, bay-control and other project-specific protection applications across the switchgear lineup.
- Built and verified automated control logic for breaker operation, interlocking, equipment-state supervision, alarms and protection actions, reducing dependence on hardwired point-to-point logic.
- Engineered the digital substation communication layer around IEC 61850-capable IEDs, including signal structures, station-level data exchange and peer-to-peer functions where required by the approved design.
- Verified binary I/O, measurements, protection indications and control commands from field level through the digital automation layer to the supervisory system.
- Supported systematic commissioning across a very large number of panels, applying repeatable testing and configuration methods to maintain consistency between bays and minimise commissioning risk.
- Contributed to a scalable digital architecture designed for high availability, clear diagnostics and future expansion in a continuously operated pharmaceutical environment.
The main value of the project was the transition from conventional panel-by-panel control toward an integrated digital substation. Standardised IED engineering, structured communication and repeatable logic made a large 156-panel installation manageable, testable and maintainable.

Public facility context verified against Amgen Ireland. ABB documentation confirms REX615 as an IEC 61850-capable, multi-application protection and control platform for digital substations.
